Shapes in Art

NICOLE ELARAR
NICOLE Elarar was born in Casablanca, Morocco where the bright natural light and the white painted walls of the city instilled in her an acute sense of perception.
This period of childhood observations was however interrupted when at a young age Nicole and her family moved to Israel. There Nicole studied and subsequently served in the Israeli Army.

During her service she learned among other things to observe the calm and sensual contours of the sand dunes of the Sinai desert where she was stationed. After completing her service, Nicole traveled around the world and in 1977 she and her husband settled in Canada. After spending her prime years raising her children, Nicole decided to reinvent herself by plunging into the plastic art of sculpting. Her ability to marry colour and shapes has helped her in projects as diversified as designing

and commissioning the construction of a house to working with stone from which she extracts the final shapes. Nicole is a pure "autodidact" as she has never taken formal training but rather relied on her own instinct to interpret her observations. In 1992 however, Nicole began studying sculpting techniques with Jerry-Lee Czerny and has since produced numerous pieces, some of which can be seen in the following pages.

Nicole presently lives in Vancouver where she practices her art at the Living Stone Studio under the tutolage of the sculptor Alberto Replanski.
